Barbie breaks box office records with $300,000,000 opening weekend as fans flock to cinemas in pink

defied even the highest expectations and proved the hype was more than just hear-say as it smashed box office records with its million dollar takings. 

The extravaganza starring 33-year-old as the doll herself made movie bosses a cool $300million (£233m) in worldwide sales after its release on Friday.

The 39-year-old director managed to bag her film the title of the second biggest opening of all time with Only : Endgame beating it in 2019 after it made $357m (£278m).

She also made sure she landed in the spot for producing the highest grossing film directed by a woman the cinema had ever seen. 

Barbie itself made history for its production house as it became the film with the largest pre sales any Warner Brothers film had generated, making $22.3m (£17.3m) before anyone had seen the movie.

As well as boosting box office numbers, the inclusion of the film’s soundtrack seemed it could do wonders for the artist involved with the project. 

The release of the latest feature film is on track to catapult the movie’s soundtrack songs from Dua Lipa, Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj, the Official Charts Company has said.

British singers Sam Smith and Charli XCX and American musicians Billie Eilish and Lizzo also featured on the star-studded

The Official Charts Company said London-born singer Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night, released as the record’s lead single in May, could move up 10 places.

Dance The Night – which previously peaked at number 13 – is predicted to rise to number five in the UK chart.

Ice Spice and Nicki’s rap adaptation of Aqua’s classic track Barbie Girl is also expected to benefit by reaching to a new peak of number 11 from a previous position of 20.

The rap artists are among the top talent on the soundtrack for the Barbie movie, which was released in the UK on Friday.

Also in the line-up are Ava Max, Dominic Fike, three-piece family band Haim, British artist Pink Pantheress and Australian instrumentalist Tame Impala.
