With the latest Modern Warfare 2 trailer showing off the single-player campaign, it turns out a lot of people already played the multiplayer.
Call Of Duty time is almost upon us again, as the rebooted version of the Modern Warfare games gets its sequel, handily titled Modern Warfare 2. This game sees Captain Price and Task Force 141 take on a worldwide threat. Not to be confused with the older Modern Warfare 2, where Captain Price and Task Force 141 take on a worldwide threat.
More importantly though, the multiplayer has been detailed, as content creators got their hands on it early, plus, in a behind closed doors presentation, developer Infinity Ward dropped some details about how multiplayer will work.
From the sounds of things, it’s shaping up to be yet another great entry for the multiplayer shooter, with a bigger focus on tactical elements and giving more freedom to the player to customise how they play the game.
Gunsmith returns in Modern Warfare 2
Call Of Duty laid out the groundwork for loadouts in games, leading the shift from acquiring weapons from the map to letting players choose what they want going in.
Gunsmith was introduced in Modern Warfare 2019, allowing players to tweak how the gun they liked functioned. While 2019 used a strict number of presets, Modern Warfare 2 is going to allow you to tweak everything even after you’ve done unlocking all the attachments that could make a change to the way you play.
What maps are in Modern Warfare 2?
Maps make or break a multiplayer game, with the latest Call Of Duty already showing off five maps that will be available with the game at launch.
Infinity Ward showed off maps that took place by an F1 track, a fishing village, and in a museum. Others included a training room and your traditional urban inspired map. Supposedly this one will bring in sandbox features too.
The new maps are:
- Sa’id
- Sariff Bay
- Museum
- Grand Prix
- Farm 18 Training Facility
Two new modes come to Modern Warfare 2
Prisoner Rescue and Knockout are the new modes coming to Modern Warfare 2, with both sounding fairly familiar if you’ve ever played… any other shooter ever.
What is Prisoner Rescue in Modern Warfare 2?
The newest mode, Prisoner Rescue, has you dealing with a Counter-Strike-esque situation where one team must protect some hostages from being captured, while the others need to do the rescuing.
Combined with Call Of Duty’s fast paced action, this should be a lot more interesting for those who struggled with Counter-Strike’s heavy style of play.
What is Knockout in Modern Warfare 2?
Knockout combines the frantic two-versus-two battles from Modern Warfare 2019’s Gunfight mode, where the two teams had to eliminate each other in under 40 seconds.
This time however, you’ll need to do it with five other players in a six-versus-six configuaration. The game will let you revive people until the whole squad is eliminated.
Is Gunfight in Modern Warfare 2?
No, at launch the team at Infinity Ward want players to play the new modes they’ve spent time creating. Knockout might not give you the same satisfaction as the intense battles in Gunfight, but it will probably fill that hole in your heart.
Gunfight is planned to return to the game at a later date, as Modern Warfare 2 is believed to be working on a two year cycle instead of a year, letting the developers add more to the game over time.
If true, 2023 will be the first time in over a decade that a new Call Of Duty isn’t released, although since even the acquisition by Microsoft isn’t certain yet it’s not clear whether any final decision has been taken yet.
Movement and diving in Modern Warfare 2
Infinity Ward want to change up how people think of Call Of Duty, with this year’s entry including swimming. A hated component of any classic first person shooter, swimming is being brought into the game to add another dimension.
Infinity Ward stressed that they want players to use the water to their advantage and not see it as a hassle.
With this said, movement is also getting a bit of an overhaul. While not as fluid as an Apex Legends, Modern Warfare 2 will include sliding, diving, and an all new ledge hanging mechanic.
Ledge hanging seems to be something to add an element of scouting an objective, before vaulting over as you usually would. Diving into water won’t let you shoot primary weapons and we don’t expect that you’d be able to fire any weapons while holding onto the ledge.
Modern Warfare 2 field upgrades: tactical cameras and more
Similar to the Rainbow Six: Seige camera that you can lob about the map to get a better view of out-of-view areas, Call Of Duty will be adding one too. Presumably used in Prisoner Rescue over say, Team Deathmatch, it should help to make it a more tactical game.
DDOS Attacks will disrupt all equipment and vehicles, while a new drill charge will blow a hole through a surface and kill everyone on the other side. This includes vehicles.
Inspired by Metal Gear Solid 5 it seems, the inflatable decoy is here to catch those unfamiliar players off guard while you sneak up behind them for the kill.
How to get into the Modern Warfare 2 beta
This is an easy one, as the trailer details that the beta will be available before the game launches on October 28. All you’ll need to do is pre-order the game from your chosen platform and when Infinity Ward launch the beta, you should be prompted to download it from the store.
There’s no word on a date for the beta, but it should be close to release. It’s also likely to be available around five days earlier on PlayStation.
