The controversial mobile game comes to and in June, with a surprise PC version joining them.
Activision Blizzard’s new entry in the Diablo role-playing franchise will launch on June 2, with pre-registration for already open on both Google and Apple’s devices. And, in an unexpected surprise, the game will also be coming to PC.
Diablo Immortal has been steeped in controversy since its in 2018. Fans were expecting Diablo 4 or a remaster of Diablo 2 and Immortal was (or still is) seen as an unwanted cash grab. It’s also been accused of being a reskin of another game, Endless Of God, which was developed by NetEase, who have partnered up with to help develop Diablo Immortal.
However, in the five years since its announcement, Diablo Immortal appears to have gained a slightly better reputation, after various public betas. There are still concerns though, especially in terms of monetisation and in-app purchases.
What is Diablo Immortal?
Diablo Immortal is an action role-playing game that sees you take on the demons of Hell in an attempt to stop Diablo’s, or his disciples’, nefarious plans.
You play from ae top-down perspective, whacking away at enemies and stealing their loot, which you’ll then use to outfit your chosen warrior. There’s also all the usual levelling up and customisation you’d expect of the genre.
Diablo Immortal is the first new Diablo game to be released since the expansion pack for Diablo 3 back in 2014, not including the all-in-one packages released on consoles.
itself was mired in controversy back in 2012, as it pushed forward with an always online mode that saw players locked out of the game for days, as everyone attempted to login.
It also featured a real-money marketplace where you could buy rare items that others were selling. This was tossed out with the major update that came with expansion Reaper Of Souls.
Most recently, was released to a positive response, with the faithful remaster looked on more favourably than Blizzard’s remaster of Warcraft 3 Reforged.
Is Diablo Immortal free?
As with many games hitting mobile, and not included with Apple Arcade, the Diablo Immortal will be free-to-play. However, NetEase are known for filling their games with tempting ways to spend money on them and Diablo Immortal seems to be no different.
A frequent complaint from players commenting on the betas is that the game suffers from a problem common to many NetEase titles, with constant annoying notifications. Not ones necessarily pushing notifications to your phone, but in the game itself.
Red blips will litter your menus, requesting you collect or shut off a notification. This is a common complaint across all these types of games, as developers try to keep the dopamine hits coming, out of fear of losing you to reality.
Is Diablo Immortal on PC?
Blizzard’s retort, back in 2018, of, ‘You have phones, right?’ was met with memes. The game was announced instead of the expected Diablo 4 or Diablo 2 remaster, which wasn’t taken too kindly after the hype built around the announcement event.
Since 2018, Android emulation has come on leaps and bounds, with applications like Bluestacks even sporting cloud play for a limited amount of games. These programs allow you to play Android games on your PC, which is a boon for those who are into free-to-play titles as they can run as many instances as they like – think fake, virtual phones – to get the results they want.
Emulation often comes with the benefit of using a mouse and keyboard, or even controller, in games that wouldn’t typically support it, but as Blizzard detailed in their blog announcing the PC version, they’ve purposely built Diablo Immortal PC release to deter players from using emulation.
The goes into detail about controller and mouse and keyboard support, as well as how it’ll look nicer on a monitor. This PC version could also be used to deter those who run bot farms from ruining the game.
Diablo 4 release date
The sequel to Diablo 3 is still a ways off, with the last footage of the game shown alongside Blizzard’s from March 28, 2022. Diablo 4 has no release date right now, but it definitely won’t be out this year.
Presumably because of the , the game could be expected to launch on Game Pass alongside the console and PC release dates, now that it will be an Xbox property.
2022 isn’t all empty for Blizzard though, as alongside Diablo Immortal, the company will be releasing Overwatch 2’s . It begins April 26 but the final game, like Diablo 4, also has no estimated release date.
Blizzard are currently set to release the next later this year though.
