There won’t even be a digital event this year, but the ESA swears it’ll return with a ‘reinvigorated’ showcase in 2023.

While the ESA, the organisers behind E3, already confirmed there would be , they were supposed to be hosting a digital-only event. Now even that’s been cancelled.

Word of E3 2022’s complete cancellation began making the rounds when tweeted that he had received an email from the ESA confirming the news. Since then, the ESA has made it official via a statement on

The decision to not hold it in-person for the third year in a row was never surprising, given the coronavirus is still around. However, the ESA has not given a reason why it won’t hold it digitally

Before you assume that this is the death knell for the event, the ESA, as if channelling the Terminator, has sworn it’ll be back for 2023 with a ‘reinvigorated showcase’. One that will including both physical and digital events.

‘We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalised physical and digital E3 experience next summer,’ says the ESA. ‘Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favourite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience.’

This means, for this year, we’ll likely see a repeat of 2020 where publishers will hold their own individual presentations and showcases, although not all in the same week.

Games Awards host Geoff Keighley also took the opportunity to promote his own Summer Game Fest event, which he put together the first time E3 was cancelled, to fill the void.

That is set to take place in June, although exact dates haven’t been set and Keighley hasn’t confirmed which developers and publishers will be taking part.
