star has dismissed the backlash against her for posting photos with family members wearing right-wing political clothing.
The actress, best-known , celebrated her mother’s 60th birthday last week with a special ‘hoedown’-themed party.
Sydney took to Instagram where she shared snaps from the celebration, but eagle-eyed fans grew angry when they noticed her father appeared to be wearing a ‘Blue Lives Matter’ T-shirt.
The slogan, in support of police, was coined as to the protests, launched after the repeated deaths of Black peopleat the hands of police.
Sydney’s brother, Trent, had also uploaded snaps from the celebration showing people wearing red caps in the style of Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ caps.
However the words on the caps read: ‘Make 60 Great Again.’
Sydney received instant backlash for posting and appearing the photos with her family members, but the actress has dismissed the criticism, describing it as ‘wild.’
Taking to social media on Saturday, the 24-year-old wrote: ‘An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention (sic).’
She added: ‘Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone and Happy Birthday Mom!’
Both the backlash and Sydney’s response have proved divisive online, with some arguing she shouldn’t be held accountable for her family members’ potential views and others arguing the slogan and caps are ‘inherently political.’
‘Sydney Sweeney family has on MAGA inspired merch and she’s saying she doesn’t know why everything has to be political girl be fr,’ one Twitter user said.
Another, defending Sydney, argued: ‘Has the thought crossed anyone’s mind that it’s possible Sydney Sweeney strongly disagrees with the politics of her parents, just like an enormous proportion of Millennials/Gen Z?
‘She isn’t responsible for her family’s ideas anymore than you are. Leave her alone.’
But another hit back: ‘You’re not responsible for your family’s bigoted beliefs but it’s ridiculous for you to claim people are “making assumptions” when the shirt literally is a political statement.’
One person, referring to the often-shocking content of Euphoria, sarcastically wrote: ‘unless sydney sweeney forces her parents to vote for joe biden at gunpoint i can no longer in good conscience “stan” her tv show about high schoolers snorting heroin out of each others mouths.’
Sydney shot to major fame through her role in Euphoria alongside the likes of Spider-Man star Zendaya.
She has also enjoyed leading roles in the likes of The White Lotus and The Handmaid’s Tale.
The actress first rose to prominence in the short-lived but powerful LGBTQ+ drama Everything Sucks on Netflix, which was cancelled after just one season.
The actress has a busy year ahead as she’s set to follow in the steps of Zendaya and appear in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with new film Madame Web.
She will also reprise her role as Cassie in the third season of teen drama Euphoria, although the air date has not yet been confirmed.
