Marley was a major influence in bringing reggae music to the masses with numerous accolades, many of which came after his death, including induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The One Love singer was outspoken politically, calling for peace and unity in many of his lyrics.
He was a major voice in the Rastafari movement and supported the legalisation of cannabis.
In 1976, an assassination attempt was made on Marley with him, his wife, and manager Don Taylor suffering from gunshot wounds.
After what is thought to have been a politically motivated attack, the family relocated to England but Marley continued to perform and push his plea for peace.
He died from cancer on 11 May 1981, aged 36, after melanoma found in his foot spread to his lung and brain.
Bob Marley: One Love, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, is set to be released in 2024.
