As it happens, love and  have always gone hand in hand. After all, what couple doesn’t have to deal with finances?

Winners of the hit  dating show, though, have faced a particularly tough decision. In past series, when the winning couple is announced, both members of the couple are given an envelope.

, while the other is empty – and it’s up to the person who received the money to choose whether they share it with their partner or keep the cash for themselves.

It’s enough to test any relationship – let alone one that has had less than two months to thrive.

This season of the show has given us all the dramatic ups and downs we’ve come to expect from the ITV dating show, with couple Mitchel Taylor and Ella Barnes being dumped last night – just 24 hours away from the finale.

Whether tonight’s finalists get the option to split or keep remains to be seen.

However, have any previous winners decided to keep the money and run?

Has any Love Island winner taken the money?

Love has always prevailed… so far.

To date, the  have always opted to split the cash and start their relationship off on a high note.

2023 winners Kai and Sanam were not given the option to take the money and run, and neither were 2022 winners Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Davide Sanclimentithey automatically shared the prize fund evenly.

 and  won the show in 2021, with . Ultimately, she shared the money with her then-boyfriend Liam.

The couple has since broken up but enjoyed a year-long relationship before calling it quits.

 of the winter series in 2020, with Paige given the responsibility of choosing love or love of money.

She chose to split the cash, and thankfully it turned out to be the right decision, as the .

 and Jack Fincham won Love Island in 2018, while the 2019 winners were Greg O’Shea and . Both pairs decided to split the money, keeping things fair.

In 2017, Amber Davies and  had the choice, with the power in Kem’s hands, after he chose the envelope containing the money. He also decided to split it with Amber.

In 2016, Cara De La Hoyde and Nathan Massey were given the gold envelopes in the final. Cara decided to share, and they’re now married and have two children together.

Winners of the 2015 series Max Morley and Jess Hayes had to choose if they were in their couple for love or money. They both chose love and got to split the £50,000 prize.

It is not clear whether the split or steal twist will return for this year’s final – but if it does, could this be the year an islander finally commits betrayal?

The Love Island final airs tonight on ITV2 and ITVX at 9pm.
