Golden Globes nominations cause outrage as controversial film put in ‘wrong’ category

viewers were left baffled as the nominations for the 2024 ceremony were announced earlier today, with one category in particular sparking confusion.

It was down to Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama to confirm the nominations, ahead of the awards on January 7.

May December, which was released on in the on December 1, has been tipped to win big, with all three main stars – – earning acting nods.

However, the film was mentioned in the musical or comedy category, between Gracie (Julianne) and Joe (Charles), which started when he was just 13 years old, and his partner was 36.

As the nominations were announced, fans flocked to social media to question why the flick, which is available to stream on Sky Cinema and NowTV in the UK, was listed as a comedy.

‘How the hell is May December considered a comedy? #GoldenGlobes,’ a Twitter user commented.

‘Why is May December being campaigned as a comedy?? #GoldenGlobes,’ another penned.

‘How TF did May December become Musical/Comedy hahahaha #GoldenGlobes,’ a follower questioned.

‘Now I have not seen May December but…is it a comedy? #GoldenGlobes,’ a commenter said.

A baffled poster replied: ‘May December is considered comedy!! I’ll never understand #GoldenGlobes lol.’

‘I love the comedy May December #GoldenGlobes,’ one joked.

Alongside a screenshot from the film, showing Charles Melton’s character having a painfully honest conversation with his onscreen son, a viewer added: ‘The #GoldenGlobes nominating Charles Melton for an acting award but also nominating May December as a comedy.’

May December, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May was inspired by the true story of 34-year-old teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, who began a sexual relationship with her student,  Vili Fualaau, when he was just 12 years old.

The film occurred years after the Scan**lous events that began their relationship, with the married couple anxiously awaiting the arrival of Elizabeth (Natalie) – who spent time with the couple before starring in a movie about the controversy.

It racked up four nominations at the Golden Globes, with Natalie mentioned in the category for performance by a female actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy, alongside Emma Stone, Fantasia Barrino, Jennifer Lawrence, Margot Robbie and Alma Poysti.

Julianne was named in best performance by a female actor in a supporting role in any motion picture, going up against Danielle Brooks, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Emily Blunt, Jodie Foster and Rosamund Pike.

Meanwhile, Charles was tipped for best performance by a male actor in a supporting role in any motion picture, battling it out against Mark Ruffalo, Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr, Ryan Gosling and Willem Dafoe.

The Golden Globes will be taking place on January 7 at 8pm ET.
