We’ve had , a , Winnie the Pooh , and even murderous piñatas – and now we’re getting a horror film about a killer sloth. Yes, really.

has only just hit our screens as Jason Statham gets ready to fight off a blood-thirsty horde of Megalodons again, and we’re gearing up for the next outlandish creature feature.

And our prayers have been answered with Slotherhouse – a wild upcoming film that sees the slowest mammal on earth in a whole new light.

In its trailer, released this week, we see the small mammal picking off members of a sorority house one by one after it was taken in by one of the girls who believed it to be an adorable, cuddly creature.

The bizarre first glimpse sees a sloth lunging at one of the students as she peeks behind her shower curtain, holding a pink sponge for reasons unknown.

In another scene, we see it camouflaged against a pile of stuffed toys while frowning after the narrator warns ‘in the jungle, she’s a beta, but out here, she’s an alpha’ – giving rise to our antagonist’s name, Alpha.

The menacing trailer ends with a number of shots of the girls screaming for their lives as they try to escape from the unlikely slayer, forced to pose for pictures and sit comically in a small pink car for their amusement.

Fans hooked by the trailer won’t have long to wait for its release as it ends by saying it is coming to theatres on August 30.

Those who have been introduced to Alpha and her murderous ways have been quick to take to social media to share their thoughts.

Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, many said how ‘ready’ they were for the film’s release and how it ‘had them at killer sloth.’

‘A movie about a killer sloth. Count me in,’ one user posted, with another saying ‘Cinema is so back, y’all.’

‘Yoooo!! Just watched the trailer for #Slotherhouse and was laughing the whole time ??. Maybe it’s actually scary ??‍♂️,’ one person added.

Another summarised: ‘SLOTHERHOUSE seems interesting. It looks like my kind of movie, where it’s dumb fun, and an absurd killer.

‘Although it does feel like if Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey had a bigger budget. Not the greatest acting, but higher quality looking. Also, happy they went practical.’

One person even pointed out the opportunities for a whole franchise, posting: ‘A Murderous Sloth Terrorizes a Sorority in New Slasher Movie ‘Slotherhouse’. You know they’re going to produce four more of these movies just so they could use the title ‘Slotherhouse Five.’

The first poster for the film has also been released, showing three sloth claws drenched in blood with the tagline ‘don’t rush, die slow.’

Directed by Matthew Goodhue, a synopsis for the film reads: ‘Emily Young, a senior, wants to be elected as her sorority’s president. She adopts a cute sloth, thinking it can become the new mascot and help her win until a string of fatalities implicates the sloth as the main suspect in the murders.’

It will see Titans actor Lisa Ambalavanar take on the lead role of Emily alongside the likes of The Last Voyage of The Demeter’s Stefan Kapicic, EastEnders’ star Sydney Craven, and High School’s Olivia Rouyre.

Slotherhouse will be released in cinemas on August 30.
