Knives Out star Toni Collette, Ice Age voice actor , and Moana voice actress Auliʻi Cravalho are among the big names.

So far, critical reviews have been positive, but audience scores have been less favourable, with early viewers expressing mixed feelings.

The Power is based on the 2016 science-fiction novel by British writer Naomi Alderman, which was released by Viking publishers.

Winner of the 2017 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction, The Power tells the story of the day women develop the ability to release lightning from their fingertips.

This special ability allows them to become the dominant sex and establish a matriarchy – although, as you’ve probably guessed, it isn’t as simple as it sounds.

The novel drew comparisons to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which was adapted into an Amazon series starring Elisabeth Moss.

It was also featured on former US President Barack Obama’s list of favourite books of the year in 2016, which gave it a worldwide push.

Speaking about the series as it was announced, Alderman said: ‘The story is a global one, about the lives of women and men everywhere in the world, so I’m hugely excited.’
