We hate to burst the bubble of any fans, but the recast for the iconic spy is still a long way off yet.
Barbara Broccoli, who runs the money-spinning 007 franchise with her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, has confirmed this is the case – even – in a new interview.
The producer admitted there is a ‘big, big road ahead reinventing’ the role of the suave spy after ’s Bond died in his final outing, 2021’s .
And this appears to be despite the being a favourite for the role, as well as many , Tom Hardy, Regé-Jean Page and Cillian Murphy also since Craig handed in his licence to kill.
Discussing how Bond is crafted to be a product of the times each time someone new steps into the role, Broccoli explained: ‘I go back to [1995’s] GoldenEye when everyone was saying ‘the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world’s at peace, and now there’s no villains’ – and boy, was that wrong!
‘Daniel gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character … and also the world was ready for it.’
She then added to : ‘I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there’s a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven’t even begun with that.’
The 63-year-old was speaking to promote the new Prime Video reality series 007: Road to a Million, which sees nine pairs of normal people take on a series of Bond-style challenges.
Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, 53, recently sparked speculation some of his favourite actors could be the next 007 after he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast it would be film – but only at the ‘right moment’, given the ‘particular set of constraints’ you have to work within.
For him, that would also require a say in casting.
Some of the filmmaker’s favourite stars – including , 47, and The Dark Knight Rises star Hardy, 46, have been named as bookies’ top picks to step into the 007 part – along with the latest Batman star Robert Pattinson, 37, who featured in Nolan’s mind-bending time travel film Tenet.
He told host Josh Horowitz: ‘You wouldn’t want to take on a film not fully committed to what you could bring to the table creatively. So, as a writer, casting, everything, that’s the full package.
‘You’d have to be really needed, you’d have to be really wanted in terms of bringing the totality of what you bring to a character. Otherwise, I’m very happy to be first in line to see whatever they do.’
The director has actually chatted with the powerhouse producers ‘over the years’ he revealed in 2017, two years after .
At the time he told Playbook that ‘maybe one day that would work out’.
