was carted around the set of Morbius in a wheelchair after his commitment to hobbling to the bathroom in character on crutches took too much time out of the shooting schedule.
The 50-year-old star is and would stay in character as Michael Morbius – who suffers with chronic pain – by using crutches, but to speed things up when he needed to relieve himself, he agreed to have a crew member push him in the chair.
In a new interview with about the Marvel flick, which has , director Daniel Espinosa confirmed the rumour that ‘a deal was made’ with the actor as it was ‘taking so long between for pee breaks’.
Espionsa, who had previously revealed after watching his ‘spooky’ level of commitment, defended the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman and Oscar-winner’s bahaviour though, explaining: ‘I think that what Jared thinks, what Jared believes, is that somehow the pain of those movements, even when he was playing normal Michael Morbius, he needed, because he’s been having this pain his whole life. Even though, as he’s alive and strong, it has to be a difference.’
He continued: ‘Hey, man, it’s people’s processes. All of the actors believe in processes. And you, as director, you support whatever makes it as good as you can be.’
Espinosa, who also helmed Safe House and Life, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, insisted he wasn’t annoyed by Leto’s approach and was happy to accommodate his process however he could.
Asked if Jared’s slow movement was frustrating, he replied: ‘But it’s more that I think the directors that don’t like actors get really frustrated about that.’
The director described actors’ methods as ‘really mysterious’ and reasoned that they all ‘have these traits’.
‘If you want a completely normal person that does only things that you understand, then you’re in the wrong business. Because what’s different is what makes them tick.
‘It’s very hard to be able to say, “I can take this part away and I will still get the same stuff from him.” I don’t do that. I’m more to see like, “Hey, if you’re doing this, we have to do this.”’
The House of Gucci star previously said it was ‘OK’ in House of Gucci, admitting it was ‘a big swing’.
Leto also recently doubled down on his , saying that people should be ‘thankful’ for the revenue they create, as he drew on his teen experience of working at a cinema.
He had previously stated that he felt they were ‘keeping cinema alive’.
He added: ‘Especially those of us who are big fans of cinema and theatres, we should be thankful that these films even exist. Because they help support the ecosystem, so that other films that are adult dramas, like House of Gucci, have theatres they can actually be in. That’s my point.’
