Johnny Depp and Amber Heard ‘used safe word during arguments’

has testified that she and ‘used a safe word’ in arguments they had during their marriage.

On Monday, Heard, 36, returned to the stand at the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia.

She said: ‘Unfortunately, the violence became almost normal, especially towards the end.’

Under questioning from her attorney, Elaine Bredehoft, she also said that they used the word ‘couch’ as a safe word, signalling a ‘truce’, saying that they should ‘put down the proverbial guns and say “we’re not fighting anymore.”‘

Depp, 58, previously offered a different explanation.

In a previous audio clip played to the court, Heard said: ‘I want couch. By the way, you just threw a f**king cigarette on me.’

When Depp was asked what the exchange meant, he responded: ‘It’s pretty clear she’s ordering me on the couch.’

During her testimony, Heard went on to claim that Depp punched her and put cigarettes out on her skin.

She said the pair to help them deal with communication problems.

Heard added that she would deal with ‘different versions’ of Depp, claiming one version wouldn’t remember what the other had said, due to his drug use.

Depp , claiming he was more inclined to use drugs and alcohol due to his constant clashes with Heard.

‘It breaks you down, the constant haranguing breaks you down,’ he told the court.

‘Yes, I was more inspired by Ms Heard to reach out for a numbing agent because of the constant clashes.

‘There wasn’t a day that she would wake up and you’d expect something would hit the fan, and pretty much like clockwork it did.

‘I had to have something to distance me and distance my heart from those verbal attacks, I had to have something to be able to maintain me.’

The Pirates of the Caribbean star is suing ex-wife Heard after she wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post, discussing , and is seeking $50million (£39million) in damages. 

Depp was not named in the article, which was published in 2018, but his lawyers argued that it falsely implies  when they were married. Heard is countersuing.
