fears that her son Harvey won’t be able to get the job that he desires due to attitudes towards .
Harvey, 20, was born with septo-optic dysplasia, a rare disorder that affects his vision, brain function, and hormones, but Katie doesn’t want that to hold him back from having a career. However, the mum-of-five is quickly discovering it’s not that easy to achieve.
‘Like many other young people with a disability he’s finding it difficult making the transition into adulthood – especially when it comes to getting a job,’ she explained.
‘I want nothing more than for Harvey to find his dream job – but because he needs so much support, I worry it won’t be possible.’
Katie, 44, and Harvey will be exploring the possible opportunities and barriers in a one-off special for BBC’s The One Show.
The pair travel to Wakefield and learn more about DFN Project Search – a scheme offering work experience placements to disabled people at private and public organisations, including more than 35 NHS hospital trusts. Harvey quickly gets involved by mopping a floor showing his keenness to work.
They also get the chance to meet disabled people who were able to secure jobs, along with their families.
The experience left Katie feeling hopeful: ‘After meeting the families today I realise that Harvey can get a fulfilling job and hopefully he’ll be able to get the independence he desperately strives for.’
This isn’t Katie’s only BBC project, as she is said to be in talks to front a new show with 15-year-old daughter Princess, which would focus on what it’s like to grow up with a famous mum. Katie also has children Junior, 17, Jett, eight, and Bunny, nine.
As per , Katie has been in talks with the BBC about the project, which would follow Princess around her 16th birthday next month.
A source told the outlet: ‘Katie’s had huge success with her documentaries with Harvey and believes this would be just as impactful.
‘People are obsessed with the relationship between her and Princess, and all have their opinions – this will be their time to show what goes on behind closed doors.’
