, the and Tony Award-winning actor, has died aged 89.
His death was confirmed to by his sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony, who jointly offered a statement on the family’s behalf: ‘Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.’
The actor most recently starred alongside in the series The Kominsky Method, which earned Emmy nominations in 2019 and 2020, and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in 2020 and 2021.
While his career spanned six decades, Arkin was perhaps best known for playing Edwin Hoover in the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine, the grandfather of the dysfunctional family.
He starred in the film alongside Greg Kinnear, Steve Carrell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano and Abigail Breslin.
His role — which only spanned 14 minutes of screen time — earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
His turn in the 2012 -directed political drama earned him his fourth Oscar nomination.
Born in Brooklyn on March 26, 1934, Arkin’s family moved to Los Angeles when he was 12.
He often said he decided to become an actor when he was just five.
Arkin started his career on Broadway, soon after appearing in the play Enter Laughing in 1963, for which he received the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play.
In the decades following he had roles in movies ranging from Catch-22 (1970), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) and Get Smart (2008).
He was also known for roles in TV shows Escape from Sobibor (1987) and as Harry Rowan in 2003’s The Pentagon Papers.
From 2015 to 2016 Arkin also voiced J.D. Salinger in the Netflix animated series .
Arkin was married three times, the first to Jeremy Yaffe, the second to actress Barbara Dana.
All three of his sons became actors.
Arkin is survived by third wife, Suzanne Newlander Arkin, whom he married in 1999.
