Australia season 9 has resulted in American viewers hitting out at the show for a complete ‘lack of diversity’ in its cast.
MAFS in America often hosts a racially diverse line-up with several black, Asian and mixed-race couples.
But when the Australian spin-off premiered in the US on March 30, viewers were instantly shocked by the differences in those taking part.
Despite it only having aired two episodes so far, those watching in the States have panned it for just about everything.
From an abundance of lip fillers to loud background music, they’re not impressed.
But it’s the that has angered them the most.
Sharing their thoughts on season nine, one viewer asked: ‘Why is everyone blond and white?’
Someone else echoed: ‘Are there no Spanish, black or Asian people in Australia?’
‘No POC, I won’t be watching,’ noted a viewer.
An Instagram user commented: ‘No diversity/inclusion on MAFS Australia. I haven’t watched one season yet because of the lack of diversity. Other people do exist.’
The cast of the latest season doesn’t have any Black or Spanish contestants.
and half-Chinese; and Al Perkins, who is half-Malaysian, are the only non-white cast members who feature.
It’s not the first time the latest season has been slated, with many Australian viewers themselves slamming the lack of diversity when it was released Down Under back in 2021.
Selina asked her husband Cody Broomley whether his lack of attraction to him was due to her Asian heritage.
He responded: ‘I think it did honestly have something to play on it initially.
‘I’m not racist by any means but it’s not something I’m familiar with. To be honest… the short answer is it probably did.’
Cody later attempted to defend his remarks to producers and claimed: ‘Selina’s nationality, or ethnicity or however you want to phrase it, is not a big deal.’
However, some have been much more enthusiastic over its release, dubbing it ‘better than the US’ version.
‘Love this show! The process [is] so much better than the U.S. version,’ one fan said.
‘So much better than the U.S. one. It’s obviously scripted but the drama makes it worth watching. The U.S. one pretends to be “real”. Such a bore,’ another added.
A third commented: ‘Can’t wait. This is my favourite show. The Aussie version is by far, 150 per cent better than the U.S. version.’
