Matthew McConaughey shuts down anti-gun question

The actor, 53, was this week to promote his debut children’s book, Just Because.

But after speaking about the importance of the project as a father of three, conversation then turned to whether the actor was considering a run for office after he did so two years ago.

Co-host Sunny Hostin began by applauding Matthew for being ‘, and gun violence in particular’.

‘In 2021, you considered a run for governor of the state of Texas before deciding to focus on your family. Do you think political office is in your future?’ she asked.

‘If it’s where I would deem myself most useful, yes,’ he replied.

He added: ‘Right now, I want to be most useful as a father.’

However, a follow-up question by Joy Behar made for a tense exchange.

‘Do you think you could get elected in Texas being anti-gun?’ she asked.

‘One thing about me and politics,’ he replied, while pointing a finger at Joy, ‘to give you a direct statement right there, is me playing a game I’m not interested in playing’.

‘Ok, don’t do it,’ she conceded.

After an ad break, Sunny addressed what had happened and said: ‘I did want to say that I’ve done a lot of research in terms of your advocacy, and I don’t know that you’re anti-gun, I think you’re pro-gun responsibility and legislation.’

After a mass shooting at a school in Matthew’s hometown of Uvalde, Texas, in June last year, the actor pleaded with his fellow Americans to ‘renegotiate our wants from our needs’.

At the time, he wrote on Instagram: ‘We have to rearrange our values and find common ground above this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children’s issue.

‘This is an epidemic we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we may stand on, we all know we can do better. We must do better.’

Soon after he and wife Camila Alves McConaughey of their Just Keep Livin Foundation’s Uvalde Relief Fund.

In addition to grief counselling, the fund was started to support victims’ families with burial costs and ‘other immediate and long-term needs of the community’.
