Mel C has spoken out about the current crisis in the UK, branding it a ‘flipping disgrace’.
The star, 48, admitted she usually shies away from , but believes ‘any person with morals’ can see that the situation the UK is facing ‘isn’t right’.
Mel opened up on the cost of living crisis and the recent changes made ahead of November’s budget, which included a U-turn from the government on removing the 45% tax bracket for the highest earners.
She revealed to Times Radio’s Cathy Newman at the Cheltenham Literature Festival that she believes Prime Minister only has Girl Power ‘in essence’, rather than truly embodying the phrase.
Mel explained: ‘I kind of avoid political issues but I didn’t have my photograph taken with Liz at a certain event I was at recently. And I’ll leave it at that.’
When asked if Ms Truss was ‘Girl Power’ by being a female leader, Mel added: ‘You know, in essence. But I don’t want that to sound like that is my beliefs.
‘It’s a very difficult time, as we all know, in the UK right now and I come from an area of the UK where lots of people struggle financially.
‘I try not to be political but in all honesty it’s… I can’t swear. It’s a flipping disgrace. Isn’t it, though?’
Mel revealed she disagreed with bankers getting their bonuses, adding: ‘I’m in a very privileged position, you know, I can’t get up on my high horse and start saying things, but I think any person with any morals can see what’s going on isn’t right.
‘But I think we all feel just so worn out by it all and it concerns me what’s going to happen. People are desperate, what is going to happen?’
Mel also revealed that she thinks she would have struggled in the Spice Girls if social media had existed at the height of their fame, but is glad it exists as an ‘immediate voice’ to correct people if something incorrect is written about a person.
