No one is quite sure whether a new anniversary website for Metal Gear is legit or not and, if it is, if we should even be excited.
Given ’s recent track record with its classic franchises, no one was really expecting it to do anything for Metal Gear’s anniversary, with the series turning 35 in July.
However, that trademark exclamation mark popped up over people’s heads when they spotted specifically designed for said anniversary. It’s currently completely featureless, save for a new logo, but if taken at face value, this suggests Konami does have celebration plans.
While it does look legitimate at first glance, with the Konami logo in the top left corner, plus links to the official Konami website and a copyright trademark at the bottom, there is unfortunately enough reason to suspect that it’s actually a hoax.
This is partly due to the timing, what with today being April Fool’s Day. Although Konami would have to be extremely tone deaf to prank fans with a fake anniversary website when it has thoroughly neglected the series for so long.
has also claimed to have found the contact information for whoever registered the website, which they think proves that Konami didn’t make it.
Konami’s name isn’t mentioned anywhere, and the registrant is based in Brea, California. Konami’s US office is in California too, but in the city of Hawthorne, according to .
It’s worth remembering that Konami doesn’t even own , another one of its beloved and seemingly abandoned franchises. Earlier this year, someone snapped it up after Konami let its ownership expire and it now only consists of a tweet by Silent Hill artist Masahiro Ito, which reads ‘I wish I hadn’t designed f***ing Pyramid Head.’
To call Metal Gear’s future uncertain would be an understatement, especially given the exit of series creator . Since then, Konami has made only one major new game without him, in 2018’s – which proved a critical and .
There were rumours last year that Konami was getting back into premium game development, with anonymous sources claiming that are in the works.
These supposedly include remasters of previous games in the series for modern platforms, plus a full remake of helmed by Singapore studio Virtuos.
One popular rumour was that ’ next remake would be a Metal Gear game, but the studio is now owned by Sony and is working on an original project.
Despite how detailed last year’s rumours were, nothing has come of them since then and Konami hasn’t so much as hinted at any re-releases, let alone remakes or new games.
Ideally, Konami would make a game announcement to coincide with the anniversary, but it’s sadly more likely that it will just release new merchandise. After all, it has continued to profit off Silent Hill with , but no new games.
Worse case scenario, it announces Metal Gear NFTs, like it did for .
