has shared what it was like to experience body-shaming as a girl growing up in the public eye as she said that her advice to a younger Millie would be to ‘hold on to yourself’.
The star shot to worldwide fame on the hit Netflix show in 2016, at the age of just 12, in the central role of Eleven.
As the show gears up to in late May, the 18-year-old actress has also made her directorial debut with a short film.
The coming-of-age tale examines the psychological impact of becoming a woman in the public eye, and stars Millie alongside a six-year-old performer as her younger self.
Starting her advice to her younger self with the fact it would be ‘a crazy ride’, she added: ‘Try and remember who you are and not the people around you. People come and go into your life and they can negatively and positively influence it.
‘Understand that the only person you can hold on to is yourself, and don’t lose yourself in that. Because it’s so easy to, in this industry, especially at a young age.’
Explaining that she ‘got the brunt of it’, Millie recalled that she had always wanted to be an actress and to be on Stranger Things but said that ‘there was stuff that I didn’t ask for’.
Speaking to , she continued: ‘Some of the things that I found harder were people criticising my body, who I am, the kind of person I am… if I talk too much. Things like that – I didn’t ask for those things. They’re cyberbullying. And those are the things that I wanted to show in the film.’
Millie revealed that she had touched on the topic with her six-year-old co-star Honey too, urging her to ‘enjoy every moment’ of what she has now as ‘those things are hard to get back’.
The Enola Homes star, who recently shared that she found of Stranger Things , has also previously spoken out on through her fame.
