Stephen Curry has opened up on his family life and whether he would want his children to follow in his incredible footsteps.
The Golden State Warriors champion has dominated the NBA over the last few years, with a new Apple TV+ documentary focusing on his journey to becoming one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
As well as his incredible career on the court, Underrated also shed light on the 35-year-old’s life , and their three kids – daughters Riley and Ryan, and son Canon.
Cameras caught a glimpse at some of their most intimate moments, showing the athlete , and also getting to grips with college assignments so that he could get his degree.
Discussing the documentary in a chat with Metro.co.uk, talk turned to whether he would want to see the youngsters to follow his lead when it comes to sports.
‘I want them to follow my footsteps, not necessarily it having to be basketball, it’s just figuring out what makes you unique, what you’re passionate about, what you want to spend your time doing and really commit yourself to, there’s no wrong answer to that,’ Steph told us.
‘It’s a matter of finding out what that is for themselves. We’re going to do everything we can as their parents, me and Ayesha, to support them in that journey.
‘Honestly, right now, I think my son is the only one that really is interested in basketball, so that’s solving itself right now.
‘My job as a parent is to just support them in whatever they do and teach them what it means to work hard at something, and put yourself out there.’
When asked whether his children would be sitting down to watch Underrated when they’re older, Steph admitted he has plans to have it on a loop in the household.
‘I’ll show it to them – I think my oldest has seen it once – but I’ll show it to all three of them now, we’ll probably watch it a couple of times a year just to make sure they get a little energy from it,’ he continued.
The sports icon joined the Golden State Warriors in 2009 after being picked in the NBA draft, and has gone on to reach new heights, winning a string of championships with the team.
He has well and truly cemented his status as one of the greatest athletes of all time and is nowhere close to being done on the court.
Underrated unpacked his journey from a college athlete to a four-time NBA champion, while also showing a side of himself that fans don’t regularly see – with scenes of him studying tirelessly to obtain his degree, and spending his downtime with wife Ayesha and their brood.
Discussing why it was important to include all aspects of his life, Steph said: ‘I think it was important just because you want to have transparency on everything that went into making me the basketball player, the person that I am.
‘That’s not just the work that I put in, that’s the people that I’ve been surrounded with, and blessed to learn from, be coached by. The influence of my parents, my teammates, there are so many people that have been a part of my story that I regularly make sure to acknowledge.
‘But I think throughout the film, you see the recollection of those three amazing college years and that tournament run that we had at Davidson, you hear from different people’s perspectives. It’s amazing to relive it through their eyes.
‘But also, to just understand that it was such a unique time in my life, because you see the finished product, or where I am right now, but not many people knew what the journey was to go through the lumps that I went through in high school and college, to really find out who I was as a basketball player.
‘It opened up the veil on that a little bit. It’s almost 15 years ago that we were in the tournament and trying to make that deep play a tournament run.
‘It’s a nice contrast to how things are now versus what the origin story really was.’
Stephen Curry: Underrated will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 21.
