Nicolas Cage ‘accidentally drank his own blood’ while playing Count Dracula in new movie Renfield

The 59-year-old actor sank his teeth into the role of Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire opposite as the bloodsucker’s downtrodden servant Renfield, who is trying to break free form their toxic relationship after decades as his dogsbody.

Fans are ravenous to see Cage portray the Prince of Darkness, and the in the trailer promise exactly the camp flair you’d hope for from the two-time Oscar nominee.

Now, however, he’s shared one of the downsides to that, in that he kept biting his own lip because his ceramic fake fangs were so sharp.

The Con Air and Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent star explained to a fan who asked if any real blood was consumed in the making of the film: ‘No reason in terms of method, but the fangs were genuine fangs, they were ceramic and quite pointy.

‘So I did bite my lip a few times which made me drink my own blood,’ he added in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session .

His co-star Hoult then joked that he ‘quite like[s] the taste’ of his own blood, to which Cage responded: ‘There is something warm and fuzzy about it.’

The actor previously told The Sun newspaper he decided to wear the fangs as much as possible so he could get used to speaking with them in.

‘I was trying to give the character an eloquent and elegant voice that was pretty hard to do with all the ceramic material in my mouth. But I got used to it by taking them home, leaving them in when I was in my hotel room.’

In the film, Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased, but he has finally reached his limit after centuries of servitude.

Desperate to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of Dracula, Renfield starts to figure out how to end his co-dependency.

Renfield is set to release in cinemas on April 14, 2023.
