A Maryland man was arrested on charges of detonating explosives, after police traced him to the crime scene using the cards that he had left behind.
In the last couple of weeks, there has been a series of illegal M-80 explosives (a type of oversized firecracker) going off in the otherwise peaceful suburban town of Aberdeen, Maryland.
The police had been struggling to track down the individual behind these explosions, but then they stumbled upon an unexpected lead.
Officers discovered a collection of Pokémon cards in a small crater left by one of the unlawful blasts, which were enough of a clue to lead to an arrest.
Weirdly enough, this isn’t the first time Pokémon cards have been linked to a crime, as recently a Sheffield man was jailed for life after he with a bag full of them.
Following the discovery of the Pokémon cards at the crime scene, a lightbulb went off in the mind of a police officer.
He remembered an arrest he made a few days earlier involving 34-year-old Jeremiah E. Burnette, who was found with a stack of the cards in his possession.
With a search warrant in hand, law enforcement conducted a raid on Burnette’s residence, unearthing several packages of Pokémon cards. Fox 5 News that Burnette was subsequently arrested on Tuesday, June 13.
When questioned by the police, Burnette confessed to being the mastermind behind all the explosive chaos that had happened over the past few weeks.
However, he weirdly kept mum about the reasons behind his actions, or the significance of carrying Pokémon cards during the alleged crimes, leaving investigators and law enforcement puzzled.
Burnette was transported to the Harford County Detention Center but was subsequently released after paying the $10,000 (£7,450) in bail.
He is being charged with two counts of possessing a destructive device and two counts of using a destructive device, according to the police.
Luckily, the only thing that took a hit during the explosions were Burnette’s Pokémon cards, as there were no injuries or casualties reported.
