submitted an appeal in his New York-based case following his 30-year prison sentence last summer for sex trafficking and racketeering.Â
The 56-year-old rapper reportedly filed multiple arguments outlining why he believed the conviction should be overturned.
The points he raised claimed there was a potentially biased jury and that he was misled about the age of the individuals – who were minors at the time – that he had relationships with, according to documents obtained by TMZ.
Officially filed by his attorney Jennifer Bonjean on Tuesday, Kelly is supposedly looking to either the appeals reverse his convictions or order a fresh trial.
As per the documents, the star’s legal team believed the government ‘did not meet its burden of proof in court’, despite the jury finding him guilty on all counts at the time fo his trial.
In September 2021, Kelly was charges after a trial that lasted almost six weeks. Â
His sentence was handed down by Judge Ann M. Donnelly in Brooklyn Federal Court, where she was heard telling the artist that he created ‘a trail of broken lives’.
She added that ‘the most seasoned investigators will not forget the horrors your victims endured.
‘These crimes were calculated and carefully planned and regularly executed for almost 25 years.
‘You taught them that love is enslavement and violence.’
For his crimes, he received in Brooklyn and was also sentenced to 20 in Chicago in February after he was convicted of three counts of producing child pornography as well as three counts of encouraging a minor to participate in sexual activity.
In the new appeal, the star’s legal representatives allegedly took issue with the fact that some of the jury members had watched the damning 2019 documentary and should never have been placed in the courtroom.Â
The film offered supposed victims the chance to share their side of the story before the celebrity began his legal proceedings.
Executive producer Jesse Daniels told Variety of the docuseries impact: ‘This is a story that gives a platform for survivors to speak, but as producers, we try our best to remain neutral in telling the story, and so, we believe that giving a 360-degree look at what has happened over the past 30 years is incredibly important.
‘We certainly do try our best to reach out to anybody and everybody involved, whether it’s him or those in his camp.’
