Rapper Big Pokey has died aged 45 after he collapsed while performing on stage.
The musician – real name Milton Powell – allegedly fell to the floor during a gig in Texas on Saturday, with his death confirmed by Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam III, according to reports.
His spokesperson told the Fox affiliate : ‘It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Milton ‘Big Pokey’ Powell. Big Pokey passed away on June 18, 2023.
‘He was well-loved by his family, his friends, and his loyal fans. In the coming days, we will release information about his celebration of life and how the public can pay their respects.
‘We ask that you respect his family and their privacy during this difficult time. Big Pokey will forever be “The Hardest Pit in the Litter”.’
Powell’s cause of death remains unknown.
The late star is best known for being an original member of the hip-hop group Screwed Up Click.
As well as singing, he also appeared in the 2001 film Soldiers United for Cash, with him later starring in the movie Dirty Third 2: Home Sweet Home.
In his latest post, several fans have paid tribute to the late star with one person commenting: ‘R.I.P Sensai real H-Town legend ??? So many memories made off your music.’
‘Big Pokey we Thank you for the decades of music and soul you gave us. Rest in power King. You never die,’ another penned.
A close friend of Powell, Port Arthur Native Bun B, shared a personal tribute to him.
‘I wasn’t ready for this. One of the most naturally talented artists in the city. Low key, humble mountain of a man who moved with honor and respect. He was easy to love and hard to hate….’
