Ricky Gervais ‘blown away’ by birthday shout-out from music icon at Glastonbury

was lost for words after he received the ultimate birthday shout-out from a musical icon.

For the past five days,  has been home to more than 200,000 music fans eager to watch the likes of , , and  perform in front of thousands of fans.

Among the A-listers that entertained the crowd was  Wild World and Father and Son singer , 74.

Introducing his 70s hit Tea for the Tillerman, Steven showed some love to the After Life actor, who recently celebrated his 62nd birthday.

‘Oh Glastonbury, are you enjoying yourselves,’ Cat Stevens asked the crowd. ‘You should be, it’s teatime! The only person missing right now is Ricky Gervais.’

Ricky’s beloved Twitter followers made sure the comedian wasn’t oblivious to the touching message after one fan tweeted: ‘Well well well…. How’s about that for a Birthday present [sic].’

‘@rickygervais Cat Stevens giving you a shout out at Glastonbury…. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR!’

Ricky, who was evidently touched by the message, simply replied: ‘I’m blown away.’

The BBC confirmed that Sir Elton’s headline set on BBC One received the biggest overnight audience ever for a Glastonbury performance, with a five-minute peak overnight audience of 7.6m and an average of 7.3m, as well as a 48.9% audience share.

Lorna Clarke, Director of Music at the BBC, said in a statement: ‘What an incredible way to end this year’s Glastonbury festival!

‘Elton John’s set will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most epic performances ever to light up the Pyramid Stage and was watched by a record 7.6 million people on BBC One.

‘I’m so delighted the BBC and our superb teams were able to share every bit of the magic from Worthy Farm during the weekend with audiences at home. People can catch Elton John’s unmissable set and all our other content now on BBC Sounds and BBC iPlayer, which also has over 90 other sets from across the Glastonbury stages.’

On Friday night, the Arctic Monkeys attracted a five-minute peak audience of 2.6m and an average of 1.5m, record numbers for a Friday night headline set, which was broadcast on BBC One for the first time.

Saturday’s headliner Guns N’ Rose peaked at 2.1m on BBC two, with an average audience of 1m.
