The Twilight star is not in the about the birth of the nuclear bomb, which sees as titular J. Robert Oppenheimer.
However, when working on Tenet with Oppenheimer’s director , Robert sowed the seeds that led to the creation of the three-hour war epic.
Tenet was released in 2020, marred by shutdowns, and is one of the famed director’s more complex plots with inverse timelines that left fans scratching their heads.
Notably, the creation of the mysterious ‘Algorithm’ is compared directly to the creation of the atomic bomb, inspiring an unusual wrap gift from Rob to Christopher, 52.
At this point, the director had not even considered a film about the man behind the weapon as a possibility, let alone it being his follow-up movie.
‘Rob, off the back of Tenet, where we refer to Oppenheimer, and I had written a thing about this incredible moment that Oppenheimer and the scientist of the Manhattan Project had where they could not completely eliminate the possibility that when they triggered that first , that first atomic device, they might start the chain reaction that would destroy the world,’ the director told .
Christopher continued: ‘We used that as a metaphor for Tenet, which Rob was in. As a wrap gift, he gave me a book of Oppenheimer‘s speeches from the 1950s, where you’re reading these great intellects trying to deal with the massive consequences of the way in which they’ve changed life forever, for all of us.
‘I really got hooked and got hooked on the story.’
Despite the pair’s friendship and the actor’s hand in creating the nuclear epic, Robert will not appear in Oppenenhimer.
The director clarified that this was simply a sad scheduling issue, adding: ‘He’s very much in demand these days.’
Since his days in Twilight and Harry Potter, the British actor has come a long way, appearing in much grittier pieces including The Lighthouse, Tenet and The Batman.
He hit out against in Hollywood earlier this year, discussing a potato-only diet he once went on.

He hasn’t indicated whether this would be a possibility as the director rarely reveals his plans before they are ready.
Hopefully, fans will see the duo work together again but until then, Oppenheimer will be in cinemas from July 21.
