Russell Brand has made his feelings about the coronation and very clear as he branded the public ‘stupid’ for going along with it.
The , 48, hosts Stay Free, where he discusses various topics, from free speech to AI and conspiracy theories and more.
In the most recent episode, the Get Him To The Greek star discussed the , and mocked the idea that it.
‘They talk as if there’s ways of making it more sensible and practical,’ he said, quoting newspaper headlines about how he would ‘do away with outdated silk stockings for the coronation.’
Scoffing, he put on a mocking plummy voice and said: ‘We don’t need these stockings, just a for the modern world.’
‘The whole idea is you’ve been anointed by God to be the figurehead of a nation – and however you shake this down, the wealth of the is accumulated through plunder over centuries.’
Brand said he used to be able to point out if something was weird, but ‘the art of censorship’ had led society to be ‘too bloody stupid to understand anything.’
‘And perhaps to a degree we are, because we’re willing to put up with an expensive ceremony to anoint further royalty.’
He went on: ‘Let’s face it, the death of Queen Elizabeth II mean this is time for a radical appraisal and review of whether we even need a monarchy. And the answer to that is no we don’t, because what is a monarchy? What does a monarchy do?’
While Brand is clearly not a fan of the idea of a continued Royal Family, his ex wife, US musician Katy Perry, feels differently.
