reportedly believes there are some ‘uncanny’ similarities between her own life and The Idol.
The Only Murders In The Building actress and pop star, who previously dated The Idol’s writer and star for 10 months before they split in 2017, is said to be ‘irked’ by apparent comparisons that might be drawn between herself and Lily-Rose Depp’s character Jocelyn.
A source said: ‘The similarities between Selena’s life and Jocelyn’s life are just uncanny.
‘Being [that] she actually dated The Weeknd, it is even more creepy for her. Her real-life pain was used for entertainment value and that really irks her out.’
The insider told : ‘Everyone in her team who has known her for a very long time is dumbfounded by this, but at the end of the day Selena is going to do what she always does – rise above and move on.’
The HBO series, which for its explicit content, focuses on pop star Jocelyn after she meets nightclub owner and cult leader Tedros, played by The Weekend (real name Abel Tesfaye).
The show was created by Tesfaye and Europhia boss Sam Levinson, and there appear to be some similarities between Selena and the fictional character.
‘The Idol has so many Selena Gomez parallels. Jocelyn is very Selena coded,’ argued one fan, while another argued: ‘The fact that it’s so undeniable that the idol is written about Selena Gomez is crazy I’m shooook. (sic)’
Most obviously, there is the fact that Selena dated the star in real life, while Lily-Rose’s character falls for Tedros.
There has also been some comparisons made with Jocelyn and Selena’s respective struggles and even their mannerisms, while they also both started as childhood actors before turning their attention to music.
Other similarities include backlash over Selena posing topless on the cover of her album Revival in 2015.
‘I am not going to let them get to me,’ she fired back in a past radio interview, while the character of Jocelyn pleaded her case to create a similar cover, insisting: ‘It’s my body.’
In another coincidence, both Selena and Jocelyn had to cancel some shows due to health health struggles, with another similarity coming when they were each released from treatment.
In the video shoot for Bad Liar, Selena was told to keep on her hospital bracelet for the video, while Jocelyn was told to do the same for a photoshoot.
Neither Selena nor The Weeknd have commented on the apparent similarities.
Metro.co.uk has contacted representatives for both stars for comment.
