The HBO series is pretty much accepted as , with the characters played by Kim, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon openly exploring their sexuality as young women living in New York City.
Kim burst into mainstream success with the launch of the iconic series in 1998, after first building her career with stellar roles in the likes of Police Academy in the 1980s.
And having been in the entertainment industry for over 40 years, she has now reflected on how far society has come – and how much further there is yet to go.
In a new interview with Glamour, Kim spoke about the ‘casting couch’ culture of her younger days, and says she ‘realised very early on that I was going to have to protect myself, that I would not go and meet somebody in a hotel room.
‘I was not going to be alone.’
Things have improved, especially in the last five years since the Me Too movement, Kim added, pointing specifically at the introduction of intimacy coaches as something that has ‘changed for the better.’
However, she admitted people can cross boundaries with her, confusing the actress for her character without understanding she had simply ‘played a part really well.’
Kim explained: ‘I experience misogyny every day, especially when I’m by myself.
‘But when I’m with my partner, other men know I have back up – and I hate it that, even these times, this is still the case. I get treated differently when I’m with a man, especially my partner.’
She revealed her frustration that women are still ‘treated differently, especially at work,’ despite her over 50 years of experience in the industry, but ‘change takes a long time.’
‘And misogyny isn’t something that happens occasionally. It’s prevalent and it’s hurtful,’ she added.
The star is continuing to break boundaries in the later stages of her career, as she stars in the reboot of Russell T Davies’ groundbreaking 90s show Queer As Folk.
Kim – who plays the mother of one of the main characters – will star in the first non-binary love scene of her career, where she will have sex with a person who does not identify as either male or female.
Filming for the Queer As Folk reboot wrapped back in March, after the show was brought back to life for Peacock by the Doctor Who show-runner.
The show originally aired in 1999 and ran for two seasons.
