It’s been quite the year in the world of movies, TV shows and games and Google has now revealed exactly which ones came out on top in terms of their year-in-review 2023 UK lists.

Unsurprisingly, two huge films that got everybody talking hit the top spots in terms of things people have been searching for movies-wise this year – Barbie and Oppenheimer, but the order of their popularity may be a surprise to some.

When it came down to UK TV, a British crime drama series that returned for its final outing nabbed the number one place.

The show that topped the and global lists came in at number, right before a popular Prime Video thriller.

Over in the world, fans have been obsessed with one release in particular, with a game that ended up being turned into a very successful TV show following in second place.

Most popular films of 2023

dominated Google searches in the UK after it hit cinemas on the same date (July 21) as Barbie, resulting in the portmanteau Barbenheimer doing the rounds online.

Despite Barbie topping the US and global lists in terms of Google searches and Oppenheimer following in second place, it was the other way around in the UK and apparently more people were looking up

Oppenheimer is still making its way towards the $1 billion mark at the global box office, while Barbie hit the figure months ago.

Everything Everywhere All at Once and 2022 flick The Menu rounded off the top five according to the UK data.

, John Wick 4, Cocaine Bear, Bank of Dave and Creed 3 made up the rest of the top 10.

Most popular TV shows of 2023

BBC’s Happy Valley – starring Sarah Lancashire, James Norton and more – returned this year with its , and clearly UK fans were very excited judging by the Google trends list.

HBO’s The Last of Us was at number two, while Amazon Prime Video’s The Rig, Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia and Netflix’s Top Boy rounded off the top five.

The Long Shadow, The Sixth Commandment, Daisy Jones and the Six, Luther and Black Mirror made up the rest of the top 10 TV list in the UK.

Role-playing video game , Japanese puzzle video game スイカ ゲーム (Suika Game, also known as Watermelon Game), online-only action role-playing dungeon crawling game Diablo IV, shooter game Atomic Heart and upcoming survival video game Sons of the Forest made up the rest of the top 10.
