The Mission: Impossible co-stars were but were to ‘continue working together’, before supposedly reuniting.
However, their romance doesn’t seem to have worked out, with the actor, 59, and Captain America star, 40, deciding they’re better off as pals.
The news comes just weeks after the pair attended the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in May, which insiders now say was purely for ‘support’.
‘Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out for them. They have now decided they are better as friends,’ a source told .
‘They get on really well, and have fantastic chemistry, which is why they decided to quietly give the relationship another try earlier this year.
‘But what was working behind closed doors didn’t work out so well when it was made public, and the fanfare around them as a couple exploded again.
‘They have now decided they are better as friends’.
The source also clarified to the outlet that their romance was never a stunt or purely for the cameras, adding that their relationship was ‘genuine’.
‘In spite of some rumours to the contrary, it was never just for the cameras,’ they assured.
The former couple first got together in 2020 after meeting on the set of Mission: Impossible 7, a film slated for release next year after the pandemic halted production on several occasions.
Tom, who plays Ethan Hunt in the action franchise, and Hayley, who plays Grace, got to know each other after filming took them to various locations, such as Rome, Venice, and Norway, as well as the UK –
The actors have never explicitly confirmed a romance between them, so we’ve relied on reports telling us they became ‘fairly inseparable’ and ‘hit it off from day one’ of shooting.
However, in September 2021, their relationship was thought to have ‘run its course’ after ‘a very intense period of filming together’.
A source said at the time: ‘Their filming schedules are very full-on, and Tom has a number of other commitments coming up and is always shooting around by private helicopter and jet so it just ran its course.’
They added the two are ‘still happy to work together’ and ‘still get on well’ despite their separation.
His relationship with Hayley was Tom’s first high-profile relationship since his divorce from ex-wife in 2012, with whom he shares teenage daughter Suri.
Prior to his marriage to Katie, Tom was married to from 1990-2001, and the Hollywood stars share two adopted children Connor, 26, and Isabella, 28, who had been raised in the Church of Scientology and Tom retained custody of after the divorce.
As for Hayley, she is said to have split from her English doctor ex at some point in 2020.
