Wrestling legend Kevin Sullivan has died aged 74.
The former star, who was a wrestler himself and had a successful stint as a promoter for rival WCW, had been battling a number of health issues in recent months.
His death has been reported by , with fans already paying tribute to the former WCW tag team champion.
The tragic news was first revealed by veteran wrestling TV personality Barry Rose, who is quoting by as saying: ‘With the heaviest of hearts, we are devastated to have to report the passing of the legendary Kevin Sullivan.
‘May he RIP and his family, friends and fans find comfort in how much he was loved.’
WWE boss Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque wrote: ‘Kevin Sullivan had one of the most unique minds in the history of our industry, pushing creative boundaries and developing some of the most intriguing characters to step into the ring. He had an unwavering passion for what we do. My thoughts are with his family, friends & fans.’
Current Raw general manager and wrestling veteran Adam Pearce added: ‘Godspeed, Kevin Sullivan. Whether in front of or behind the camera, your contributions to our industry are without question.
‘Grateful for the times we shared, your advice, and kindness. Honored to have gone into the @nwa HOF together. Rest well, sir. 🙏’
And WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry tweeted: ‘Prayers out to the family! RIP!’
Sullivan’s family set up a GoFundMe early last month, and his daughter Nicole revealed that in May, he ‘suffered a devastating accident’ at an autograph signing.
‘He underwent emergency surgery that saved his leg and life but faced severe complications, including sepsis and encephalitis,’ she wrote.
‘This unforeseen catastrophe has placed an immense financial burden on his family, as Kevin has been in and out of consciousness in the ICU, far from home.
‘Despite these challenges, Kevin has shown incredible resilience. Months later, he is still fighting to regain his independence.’
Fans are mourning the death of the pioneering performer and mind, with one X user writing: ‘Man, where do you start with Kevin Sullivan? RIP to a legit piece of wrestling.’
‘Wow. RIP to Kevin Sullivan, the best demonic act in the history of pro wrestling to a ridiculous degree. He was also the wrestling mind that made the bigger idea of the NWO work by covering all the details. So many great contributions to pro wrestling,’ added another.
A third fan tweeted: ‘Sorry to hear about the death of Kevin Sullivan, a uniquely creative performer with a long career.’
