Hall of Famer Edge has challenged Sheamus to a poignant match on SmackDown next week.

The legendary wrestler, who has been or so after returning in 2020 following a decade out due to a career ending injury, will be back in Toronto, next week for an emotional night.

Next Friday, the Rated R Superstar will celebrate 25 years in WWE, and he’s marking the occasion with a match against the Celtic Warrior.

The stage was set last night as he hit the ring and, and the pair shared a genuinely sweet moment before making the fight official.

Edge pointed out how appearing on Sheamus’ Celtic Warrior Workouts and falling off his bike during a ride was a turning point in getting cleared to return to WWE nine years after his retirement.

With that, he called the Irishman to the ring and challenged him to what will be an emotional match for both men.

Sheamus praised the veteran for being one of the people to take the time to chat to him when he was just an extra in WWE with no real standing, noting he was open to giving him advice to help him rise up the ranks.

He was happy to accept the challenge, but he suggested Edge may regret taking on the match when all’s said and done.

‘I just hope you didn’t make a mistake,’ he teased, potentially foreshadowing a tough night for the former world champion.

The match comes amid plenty of speculation about Edge’s in-ring future, particularly after he when he spoke to fans in the city last year.

He said at the time: ’30 years ago, 30 years ago, July 1st, 1992, I had my first wrestling match as Adam Copeland. I knew one day, I’d be standing right here in front of you, I just knew it.

‘What I didn’t dream of is that I would have to retire for nine years and fight, fight with every fiber of my being to get this back. All of you are the reason for that. This is a reciprocal relationship.’

‘I just went toe-to-toe with one of the best talents and the future of this industry in Damian Priest. I can’t wait to do it some more. I can’t wait to hopefully come back one last time, one last time here in Toronto.

‘I’m looking at the calendar, we usually come here in August. So next August, I plan on seeing each and every one of you, and in a perfect world, we’ll all say goodbye to each other that night.’

WWE SmackDown airs Friday nights at 1am on TNT Sports 1.
