star Austin Theory had an absolute nightmare as he failed to cash in his Money In The Bank briefcase in baffling fashion.

The former United States Champion attempted to use his coveted briefcase – and the contract inside it – to regain the title, despite Money In The Bank winners historically using the prize to gain a world championship opportunity.

However, he saw an opening after Lashley went on a rampage towards the end of Monday night’s episode, first attacking Seth Rollins before his planned US Title open challenge.

The All Mighty decimated the Visionary – who appears to be embracing his status as a fan favourite again – and battered him at ringside before official Adam Pearce ushered him backstage with the help of security.

With the open challenge seemingly called off, Theory’s music hit and he came out to cash in the briefcase.

Rollins kicked out of a couple of pinfall attempts and tried to valiantly fight back, but Theory – who even hit a Pedigree, with Seth took from his own mentor Triple H – to no avail.

Just as it looked like he’d done enough to get the job done with his own finishing move, Lashley reappeared and dragged the referee out of the ring.

With the ref down, Bobby – who at Crown Jewel over the weekend – beat down Theory, leaving more destruction in his path.

The now-former Money In The Bank holder got back in the ring only to be met by a huge Stomp from Rollins, which was enough to secure the win and retain his gold.

Fans were left baffled by the series of events, starting with Theory choosing to cash in on the United States Title rather than the more prestigious Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, considering he had until next summer to do so.

The fact he still lost also raises plenty of questions about his status in the company under Triple H’s regime, as his stock appears to have fallen in a big way .

WWE Raw airs Monday nights at 1am on BT Sport 1.
