Yellowjackets star Liv Hewson has spoken of their pride of being non-binary and battling through body dysmorphia to become comfortable in their body.
The actor is best known for the thrilling Showtime series as well as kooky Santa Clarita Diet, which also stars and Timothy Olyphant.
In their career, Liv has usually played teenage girls, but the 27-year-old realised at 16, describing the realisation as a ‘beautiful, celebratory thing.’
At first they didn’t tell anyone, before just telling friends and family and keeping it separate from their career – but now the star is ‘done feeling any shame or apology about it.’
‘Why would I spend any time hiding or prevaricating around that or feeling shame and grief about it? This is who I am, and that’s actually wonderful,’ they said in an interview with .
‘Not only is it not a problem, it’s a good thing, and it deserves space. I deserve to be in the world as much as anybody else; so do all nonbinary and trans people.’
Liv underwent top surgery over a year ago, and in a photoshoot with Teen Vogue shows off their scars with pride as they pose in open-topped shirts.
Admitting some people online had reacted viciously and with ‘disgust,’ they said: ‘I am not going to entertain anybody’s disgust over my body. It’s my body, it’s healthy and strong and beautiful, and there’s nothing wrong with it.’
The Dramaworld actor spoke of their ‘euphoria’ since undergoing surgery, which they wanted for over 10 years, and says they have ‘never been happier… I’ve never felt more stable and present and alive.
‘It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.’
Earlier this year the star dropped out of Emmys consideration in protest at gendered categories as there was ‘no place for me.’
‘It would be inaccurate for me to submit myself as an actress.
‘It neither makes sense for me to be lumped in with the boys. It’s quite straightforward and not that loaded.
‘I can’t submit myself for this because there’s no space for me,’ they told Variety.
