Ally McCoist has derided the fans who shone lasers at Mo Salah in last night’s clash between Egypt and Senegal.
In circumstances reminiscent of the African Cup of Nations final earlier this year, Senegal beat Egypt in a penalty shoot-out to go through to the finals.
However, the shoot-out was marred by Senegal supporters using lasers to try and put off Egypt players when they prepared to take their penalty kicks.
‘It’s shocking,’ said McCoist. ‘The amount of laser lights flashing in his (Salah) face it’s Scan**lous really. In the picture you can’t see his face.
‘They should have stopped it immediately. It’s unfair, let’s be honest about it. Having a crowd booing you when you take a penalty is one thing.
‘You can maybe accept that and say it’s part and parcel of the game although they don’t do it in rugby, but I don’t expect that to change any time soon.
‘That’s clearly out of order and affecting the player. You can shut off your mind to the noise and the boos but having those lasers flashing in your face and eyes is out of order, completely out of order.’
The Egyptian FA also complained about racism towards their players during the match and ‘intimidation’ as they made their way into the stadium.
Salah’s Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane scored the crucial penalty to send Senegal to Qatar after his teammate Hamdi Fathi’s equaliser cancelled out Egypt’s 1-0 win in Cairo on Friday night.
Egypt’s defeat now means Salah will not be playing at the World Cup later this year.
