Marseille have completed a deal to sign Arsenal left-back on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old made the switch from Benfica to the Gunners last summer and played second fiddle to Kieran Tierney at the Emirates Stadium.

The north club brought in another left-back in Oleksandr Zinchenko this summer, providing further competition in Tavares’ position.

The Portuguese will now spend the season on loan in Ligue 1, where Arsenal defender William Saliba played his football last season.

The French club announced the deal in a social media post on Saturday morning, while Arsenal also confirmed the move.

Tavares is one of a number of outgoings expected ahead of the close of the transfer window on September 1.

Fulham have reportedly agreed a deal with the Gunners to sign goalkeeper Bernd Leno, while Lucas Torreira and Hector Bellerin are also expected to depart.

A player who has already left is third-choice stopper Arthur Okonkwo, who has joined League Two side Crewe Alexandra on loan.

‘It would be good for me to be first choice here, but I have to work and get myself in the squad,’ said Okonkwo.

‘I want to be as consistent as possible and get games under my belt. With all the training I’ve had, and I’ve also played some minutes with the Arsenal first team in , I feel ready and sharp.

‘The manager [Mikel Arteta] has always given me confidence and opportunities, and it is for me now to take that, use it and display it.’

‘It feels great to be here. I have to thank Arsenal for the opportunity to be here, and especially Crewe for giving me the initial interest,’ he added.

‘I know this is a great club that wants to develop young players and hopefully we can win many games together. Coming here and playing for points will be a good experience for me.’
