Santi Mina, Celta Vigo’s 26-year-old striker, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of sexual abuse.

The Spain Under-21 international was accused of raping a woman in 2017, with another professional footballer David Goldar accused of being an accomplice, althoug he was found not guilty.

The accusation was that Mina had raped the woman in a camper van after she had gone there with Goldar, but Mina and Goldar said she consented to sexual relations.

Mina was cleared of a charge of sexual aggression, which would involved intimidation or violence against the victim.

The victim’s lawyers called for a prison sentence of nine-and-a-half years, with the state prosecutor asking for eight, but the judge sentenced him to four.

He will appeal against the verdict at Spain’s Supreme Court and will only be jailed if the appeal fails.

Mina was playing for Valencia at the time of the incident, but since returned to Celta where he started his career.

He has been a regular in the team since returning to the club, making 33 La Liga appearances this season, scoring seven goals.

The Spaniard was highly thought of as a youth player coming through at Celta, winning caps for his country at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level, earning a €10m to Valencia in 2015.

He played 150 times for Valencia in all competitions, scoring 42 goals and winning the Copa del Rey in 2019.
