Glen Johnson thinks that would jump at the chance to leave Liverpool for if they offer him game time.

Following a fantastic loan spell at last season, it was hoped that Gallagher would be able to break into Chelsea’s first-team this campaign, but the midfielder has struggled to make an impact.

He has made just two goal contributions in 35 games so far, compared to 13 in 39 for the Eagles, with both nor Graham Potter unsure what to do with the England international.

Admittedly, it was always going to be tough to be a regular in the Blues’ XI, but thanks to the January, record-signing of Enzo Fernandez and the recent return of N’Golo Kante, Gallagher has started just five games in all competitions since the World Cup.

While the return of Frank Lampard and the arrival of a new manager in the summer may rejuvenate Gallagher, many believe the 23-year-old will be one of the first players out of Stamford Bridge come the end of the season.

Palace, Everton, Newcastle and , but now a surprising new club has entered the race with the reporting that Liverpool are interested in his services.

The Reds are after a new midfielder this summer and their attention has turned to Gallagher and Chelsea teammate Mason Mount after Jurgen Klopp gave up his pursuit of Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

Reacting to this news, former Chelsea and Liverpool defender Johnson believes the young star would be willing to leave his boyhood club for a rival team, telling : ‘He certainly has potential and he has a lot to learn.

‘He’s capable of eventually being good enough to play for Liverpool, but I don’t think he’s quite there yet. He can certainly kick on under a good manager and you can understand why Liverpool are in the market for him.

‘He’s not getting a lot of game time for Chelsea and he’s going to want to go and play, so Liverpool may be able to get him for relatively cheap.

‘I think he would bite Liverpool’s arm off to get that opportunity if I’m being honest.’

Gallagher has two years left on his contract and is currently valued at around £28million, .

He could next be in action for Chelsea on Wednesday night when they travel to Real Madrid for the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
