Tony Cascarino does not believe Bruno Fernandes has shown enough to earn a new contract with .

The Portugal international, who joined United from Sporting CP in 2020, is reportedly close to signing a new five-year deal at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has become United’s talisman and the club are keen to reward him with a new deal, particularly as he’s nowhere near one of the top earners at Old Trafford on around £100,000-a-week.

Reports in Portugal suggest his new deal will see him earn £220,000-a-week.

Fernandes has scored nine times and provided 14 assists so far this season with his goal return slightly down on last season having netted 28 in all competitions during the 2020-21 campaign.

Former United skipper Roy Keane is among those to have questioned his body language at times this season, with Cascarino not convinced the attacking midfielder is deserving of a huge pay rise.

‘It is a very strange set if circumstances where you are offering someone with three years left on their contract a new five-year deal,’ Cascarino told talkSPORT.

‘When he got a hat-trick and Leeds [on the opening day of the season] you thought: ‘Wow, this is going to be some season for United.’

‘He frustrates me, he is a talent but he is always waving his arms about. It feels like he is complaining and moaning about his team all the time in the game.

‘Don’t get me wrong, Roy Keane did that, but he didn’t wave his arms around, he would have a go at you which I understand.

‘But I would get very annoyed when a player turns his back on play and is getting embroiled in other problems while the game is going on.

‘I don’t think they should be offering him a deal yet. If he gets to the stage where he is playing like the Bruno Fernandes who first arrived at the club over the next year I would be saying yeah to a new contract. Not now.’
