The and icon is co-owner of Inter Miami, the MLS side that is making huge waves this summer by bringing in the legendary figure of Messi from Paris Saint-Germain.
Another Barcelona legend, Sergio Busquets, has also signed for the Florida club, while former Barca boss Gerardo Martino has taken charge as Beckham and the rest of the hierarchy look to make significant strides.
Beckham says he was obviously aware of a deal being done to sign Messi, but maybe wasn’t quite ready for the Argentine to make it public as he wasn’t sure what was happening when the stream of messages started to land.
‘A couple of weeks ago, I woke up to about a million messages on my ,’ Beckham told . ‘I was thinking, “What’s gone off? I don’t usually get this many messages”.
‘All of a sudden, I hear has come out and announced he’s coming to Miami. Obviously, it wasn’t a surprise to me.
‘I have always said, from the word go, that if I had the opportunity to bring the best players in the game to Miami, at whatever time of their careers, I would do that. I have always made that commitment to our fans.
‘So when I hear that one of the best players — if not the best player — who has won everything in the game, who is still a great player, still young and still doing what he’s doing, wants to play for my team, it’s a massive moment for us.’
Messi is due to complete his move to Inter Miami on Wednesday and he could make his debut against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup on 21 July.
The 36-year-old is not likely to make his MLS debut until 20 August when Inter Miami take on Charlotte FC.
