David de Gea equalled Peter Schmeichel’s clean sheet record as beat Leeds 2-0 at Elland Road on Sunday.
De Gea has now registered 178 clean sheets for the Red Devils – the same amount as Schmeichel – ahead of Alex Stepney’s 174, Gary Bailey’s 161 and ’s 129.
The 32-year-old also made his 400th Premier League appearance in the match and is the youngest goalkeeper in the competition’s history to achieve that feat.
‘Today wasn’t about that, it was about winning the game and we did it so now I can enjoy the 400 Premier League games,’ De Gea told after beating Leeds.
‘It’s great to come here, play like we did today. Clean sheet, three massive points and 400 games [is the] perfect day.’
Speaking more generally after the victory at Leeds, De Gea added: ”You saw how much it meant at the end of the game.
‘The fans, the players. We deserved to win at home [on Wednesday] but today we did.
‘Great game, we knew if we could keep a clean sheet we would win the game so we did it.
‘We fought until the end like a team. Players like Harry [Maguire], he has not been playing as much as he can.
‘He played today and he played fantastic so that means that the team is playing strong.’
De Gea then spoke to MUTV and heaped praise on goalscorer Marcus Rashford, as well as Luke Shaw for providing the assist.
‘It was a perfect cross from Luke Shaw!’ De Gea said. ‘He is playing very well and then Rashy, who is on fire, is scoring lots of goals.
‘[He is] helping the team, running, pressing and I think he’s playing at the top level, so a massive goal for us and then we controlled the game. We could have scored another couple of goals.’
