goalkeeper David de Gea has provided an update on his contract situation with his current deal due to expire in the summer.

United have the option to extend De Gea’s contract by an extra year but Germany reported in December that the Red Devils were not looking to trigger that clause.

It had been thought that Erik ten Hag was open to the idea of a new No.1 despite De Gea’s desire to stay at Old Trafford and they have been linked with various other goalkeepers, .

De Gea, who is currently free to agree pre-contract terms with an overseas club and would likely have a long list of options, has now revealed that he is in talks with United over the extension and is confident it will end in a ‘good way’.

‘We’re still talking,’ the 32-year-old Spaniard said. ‘For sure it’s going to end in a good way.’

De Gea has made 517 appearances for United since moving to Old Trafford in 2011 and has won the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and League Cup during his time with the Red Devils.

He has the chance to add another League Cup to his tally when United face Newcastle United at Wembley in the 2022-23 final on February 26.

‘I’ve been in very tough moments for this club. Now I’m enjoying it more,’ De Gea added.

‘It’s great. The team spirit is great; the atmosphere is great. Everyone is thinking in the same way, playing in the same way.

‘A good manager; good players who bring experience to the team; people who want the ball, who play well with the ball – it’s a mix of everything.

‘Everyone fights until the end. It’s great to watch the team playing and performing well. We’re on a great run.’

United beat Crystal Palace on Saturday and return to action on Wednesday when they host Leeds United.
