manager has blocked backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton from leaving the club due to the ongoing drama surrounding David de Gea’s future, according to reports.

The Spanish shot-stopper’s current contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of this month, meaning he will officially become a free agent at midnight on Friday.

United had offered De Gea a new contract on greatly reduced terms which he agreed to, but then belatedly .

The 32-year-old – who has a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia – is yet to agree to the new terms, leaving the goalkeeper situation at Old Trafford in a state of chaos.

United have been linked with a move for Inter’s Andre Onana to replace De Gea, while Dean Henderson – who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest – could also be called upon.

Current number two Heaton had been expected to leave but with the situation still so up in the air, are reporting that Ten Hag has vetoed his exit.

The 37-year-old arrived at Old Trafford in 2021 on a two-year deal with the option of an additional year, though had asked to be allowed to leave so he could join Premier League new boys Luton Town.

But United have now triggered the one-year extension clause and will not allow the veteran keeper to leave until the goalkeeper situation has been resolved.

Heaton is thought to be disappointed by the decision and was keen to take on the No.1 role at Luton, with manager Rob Edwards having identified him as the ideal signing to bring experience and Premier League pedigree to his back-line unit.

According to The Telegraph’s report, with Henderson still recovering from surgery and De Gea potentially leaving, Heaton could start the season as United’s No.1.

Ideally, Ten Hag wants to bring in a new goalkeeper – who has better distribution than De Gea – to be the club’s new starter between the sticks and is keen on a reunion with Onana.

The Cameroonian worked under the United manager at Ajax and is incredibly involved in build-up play, while Inter are prepared to cash in .

But there are considerable question marks over United’s transfer budget this summer, in part due to the ongoing saga surrounding the club’s potential sale, and they have endured a frustrating window so far.

They saw three bids rejected for Chelsea contract rebel Mason Mount but have after reengaging in negotiations, while defensive target Kim Min-jae has elected to join Bayern Munich.
