Graeme Souness is in talks over a surprise return to Glasgow Rangers, with the Scottish giants looking to give their former player and manager a ‘top job’, according to reports.

report that the 70-year-old held initial talks with Rangers a few weeks ago and there will be more in the coming days.

The exact role that the Liverpool legend would take up is not entirely clear, although he would only be tempted back to the club if it was a ‘worthwhile and meaningful’ position.

Ross Wilson had been in the role of sporting director before leaving for in April and he has not been replaced.

It may be a similar position that Souness is being targeted for as Rangers look to close the gap on Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership after finishing seven points behind them last season.

On Wilson’s departure, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd admitted that it was time for a change after below par recruitment and fans turning on the hierarchy at Ibrox.

‘There’s no doubt Rangers’ recruitment over the last few years hasn’t been good enough, there’s no getting away from it,’ Boyd told Sky Sports. ‘Fans have had enough and you’ve seen them turn on Stewart Robertson [managing director] and Ross Wilson.

‘When that’s your role at the football club you’re always going to be judged on it. There’s been a lot of criticism and I’ve had my say on it as well.

‘You don’t like to see fans turning on the board but they are paying their money, they’re turning up and they want better.

‘It hasn’t been all bad at Rangers, there have been some good things, but once the fans start to voice their opinion at the level they have recently it’s only going to end one way.’

Souness became player-manager at Rangers in 1986 and won three top flight titles during his stint in charge.
