However, Varane has recovered from injury for the last month but is yet to win back his place.
Erik ten Hag paired Jonny Evans with Harry Maguire for the Manchester derby defeat to City last month, and said the decision was for tactical reasons.
With Evans injured for the win against Luton on Saturday, Varane had been expected to start.
But Ten Hag paired Maguire with Victor Lindelof and only brought on Varane in the closing stages.
Despite being fifth choice centre-back, the Athletic say Varane has accepted Ten Hag’s decision.
He believes Maguire’s plight shows that it is possible for any player to break back into the side, and feels his time will come again.
The defender remains happy at the club, despite interest from Saudi Arabia.
