The 21-year-old is enjoying a sensational season for Premier League leaders Arsenal, scoring 17 goals and providing 12 assists in all competitions.

‘I can’t believe he played at left-back when he can do that,’ Chilwell said with a smile after England beat Ukraine.

‘We see him on a daily basis around the camp and he just brings happiness to everyone. He is always smiling and a good guy to be around, and then he comes out on the pitch and delivers like that for us.

‘An assist and a goal and it ultimately wins us the game. I am delighted for him.’

The England players will now return to their respective clubs to continue the Premier League season and Southgate insists he has been delighted by the Three Lions’ progress during the international break.

‘I’m really pleased with the performance,’ he said. ‘We challenged the boys at half time because, we didn’t keep the ball well enough in Italy, but we were patient enough to keep doing things well tonight.

‘Sometimes players get bored of doing that but today they stayed to the task. The counter-pressure was excellent and I thought the three midfield players did well with that.

‘Psychologically we prepared the team for two tough games and the players have been a joy to work with. Their commitment this week has been great.’
