The 23-year-old winger has not played since August, exiled from the first-team squad by after publicly challenging his manager.

Left out of the squad for a lack of effort in training, Sancho hit back at his manager on , insisting he had been made a ‘scapegoat’. He has remained away from the first-team since then with ten Hag refusing to offer him a route back until he receives an apology.

The situation has left Sancho’s future at Old Trafford bleak. Juventus are interested in signing him in January while former club Borussia Dortmund are also monitoring the situation.

However, reports that Sancho has a ‘secret wish’ to make a fresh start at United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to complete his minority takeover to acquire 25 per cent of the club in the coming weeks and is expected to assume immediate control of footballing matters.

The report suggests Sancho could be prepared to wait to hold talks with ‘new decision-makers’ and that his situation at United could yet change.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, has indicated Sancho could yet have a future in his side but only if he publicly apologises, something Sancho has so far been unwilling to do.

Asked if Sancho has to leave in the January window, Ten Hag replied: ‘So it is about a culture and every player has to match certain standards, and it was about that.

‘So what will happen there, he knows what he has to do if he wants to return. It is up to him.’

Asked if the current situation cannot continue, Ten Hag replied again: ‘He knows what he has to do. It’s up to him.’

Probed further on whether the situation was costing United money in the form of Sancho’s wages, Ten Hag replied: ‘I think that is an internal matter. We will see what will happen.’
