Jamie Carragher doesn’t believe that Liverpool will finish in the Premier League top four following their woeful performance at on Tuesday night.

but were easily second-best against a manager-less Chelsea side following the recent sacking of .

made six changes from the side that lost 4-1 at last Saturday, including dropping key players like Mohamed Salah, but not aside from goalkeeper Alisson none of the Reds players looked up for the game.

The result means the club stay eighth in the table, seven points off the top four and their main rivals for the Champions League qualification spots, namely Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester United.

And while they have a game in hand over Spurs, they have played a match more than the Magpies and the Red Devils, while they also face competition from Brighton, Aston Villa and Brentford, with the former two taking important wins on Tuesday night.

Liverpool legend Carragher has had his doubts over his former club’s chances of getting top four for some time and following the recent results he is now even less confident.

‘I just felt that Liverpool needed to win their last two games to give themselves a glimmer of hope,’ the former defender told Sky Sports.

‘There’s no doubt that given Liverpool’s last seven or eight fixtures – or certainly the last five on paper – you felt that if Liverpool were anywhere near getting close, they should win those games [and qualify].

‘I just think the other teams are playing too well. You can make a case about winning or losing games, it’s when you look at the performances.

‘Tottenham obviously dropped points last night [against Everton], they weren’t great. But you watch Newcastle’s performance against Manchester United [in the 2-0 win last Sunday]. United as well more often than not get the job done.

‘I just don’t believe Liverpool are playing well enough to get the points they need.’

Liverpool face another tough test against league leaders Arsenal on Sunday, but after that the fixtures do get somewhat easier, with seven of their last nine games against teams below them in the table.

The only exceptions are home matches against Spurs and Villa.
